Hyde Vineyards is situated on gently rolling hills. Chardonnay variety, which we grow most of, is facing
South-East. The soil is about 36 inches deep, and the subsoil is impenetrable clay. We get less rain than
the surrounding areas. Summer temperatures are cooled by its proximity to San Pablo Bay and by the fog.
Ancient creekbeds provide drainage to the red clay loam, and add a scattering of rocks. The new plantings
are spaced 5.5 x 7 feet, and the rows are oriented North-South.
The Bordeaux red varieties are generally on the hills at the northern end of the vineyard, which is further
from the bay and its fog. The soils are loamier there and a little deeper. Though, the slopes are steeper,
the exposure is still South-East.
